ECHOCARDIOGRAM

An echocardiogram or a 2D ECHO is a test in which two dimensional ultrasound is used to examine and create images of the heart. 2D echo gives valuable information on the size, structure, pumping capacity, location and extent of any tissue damage along with function of the heart muscles, valves, pumping chambers and assess blood flow (direction and velocity).

It gives an idea about the heart’s valves and chambers as well as the flow of blood through the heart by using pulsed or continuous wave Doppler ultrasound, allowing assessment of both normal and abnormal blood flow through the heart.

Colour Doppler or spectral Doppler is may be used to examine any abnormal communications between the left and right chambers of the heart, any leakage of blood through the valves (valvular regurgitation), and to evaluate the flexibility of the valves. 2D ECHO may also pick up other abnormalities of the heart valves such as inefficient function or any damage to the heart tissue from a previous heart attack.
